project description:
Deluge is a somewhat idiosyncratic sonic installation. At first it appears to be totally silent - four sailing boats, hulls flooded with water and containing a large haul of Pacific sea shells, lie quietly, sails fluttering in a light breeze. But when the visitor dips a paddle into the water a series of parallel narratives are revealed. As the blade (in reality an electromagnetic hydrophone) swirls through the water, the soundscape is literally 'mixed' between transducers hidden in each ocean shell.
The confluence of sound and water, two liquid media resonate metaphorically and literally; European ships emerge from the silent sea to be met by great canoes of Pacific cultures about to face the deluge, at once cultural, then physical and finally, perhaps, actual.
